Guidelines for Writing a Formal Letter to Your Texas State Legislator
- Write simply and clearly.
- Be as concise as possible to communicate your intention.
- The maximum number of words allowed is 300.
- Do not to use informal language such as contractions.
- Only alphanumeric characters are allowed, and simple punctuation (, . ? ! ' ).
- Avoid special formatting.
Content of a Formal Letter
- First Paragraph
- The first paragraph should be short and state the purpose of the letter. You are writing to your Texas state legislator requesting his or her nomination to participate in the 2017 Texas High School Aerospace Scholars.
- Middle Paragraph(s)
- The middle paragraphs of the letter should contain the relevant information behind the writing of the letter. Keep the information to the essentials and concentrate on organizing it in a logical manner.
- Include the following information:
- Name of the school you attend.
- The reason(s) why you would like to participate in the activity. How will you benefit? What are your expected outcomes from participating?
- Detail your interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through extracurricular activities, or through general interests. For example: robotics club, rocketry club, academic clubs or competitions, visiting local science museums, school studies, etc.
- State your community service involvement. For example, activities you volunteer.
- Identify two or three personal character traits showing you as a strong candidate for the activity.
- Include current academic achievements.
- Last Paragraph
- The last paragraph of a formal letter should state what action you expect the recipient to take, concluding and re-stating your request for the nomination.
